harley quinn contest page by TazioBettin harley quinn contest page by TazioBettin
so there was the "break into comics with Harley Quinn" contest, right?
This is my entry. Looking around what others posted here on Deviant Art I kinda see why I wasn't chosen but ah well. It was fun to play with the concept and all.
Inks on paper, some slight effects on photoshop (the cards, of course).

Having the scenes in the playing cards was a good idea.

Thank you. I don't think it will make the difference, but maybe they'll notice it or something. Not sure. Will see at NYCC.

Wish you the best. When I saw your art, I thought of it being used for a cover for the Harley Comic than pages within the book. The cards remind me of the Joker because there is always two jokers in the deck.

That would be awesome too actually.
And yeah, that's why I used the cards theme of course :)

Me neither. I also entered the contest and I haven't heard anything from DC. I liked yours a lot; good luck!

Among the pages I've seen of this sequence, this is by far the most creative.

Thank you, you're way too kind :)
But I'm sure there will be a lot of even better submission.
Thinking about Top Cow, I believe that the winner of their contest wasn't even on Deviant Art. I can only imagine this contest attracting even more artists, not secondarily because DC only required one page to be drawn, whereas Top Cow wanted to see at least 4-5 pages.

Unless I'm not looking in the right place, I haven't seen too many people draw out the panels. Including yours, I saw four that have popped up on my watchlist, with one that I think works given the artist's style. It was even good enough to help me get over that awful costume DC has Harley wearing.

I must confess something.

I absolutely have no idea what costume she's wearing right now. I couldn't find a decent reference, and she seems to be changing it constantly. That's why I gave her the Arkham City costume in panel 1 and didn't bother with the rest.
I must say, I never liked the old skintight. It made it impossible for me to take her seriously/respect her. I guess it works in cartoons but it really was not my taste. The Arkham City one, I love. Says "dangerous crazy bitch" all over, which I suppose is what she is in the end. Again, I'm no expert with the character. I don't own a single comic or graphic novel that features her, I think...

I can respect your opinion of the original costume. I'm partially bias for it because that's how Harley always looked, to me. And the notion of a tight, full-body suit made her somewhat sexy without needing to show off any skin. And I also like the Arkham City costume and have no problems with it. Which is probably why I didn't notice that's what you drew in the first panel =P

The new costume she's in seems to be a step too far from the Arkham City version. Now, she looks like a prostitute with a clown fetish, in my opinion =(

But I guess my disdain for it can stem from how I feel about the New 52, overall. And DC's "this is how it's going to be, so suck it up" attitude about it makes me like it even less.

Well I can't complain with superheroes not wearing their pants over the skintights...
And Action Comics was amazing, especially with Grant Morrison writing it. Also liking Supergirl. Green Lantern is fucking amazing from beginning to where it is now. Injustice: Gods Among Us is also very good so far.
Keep in mind that in Italy we're behind the american publication by some issues, I think 5 or 6.

Looking at the other side. I'm reading All New X-Men and I'm going to drop it. It's just yet another event which you can't follow unless you've been following X-Men for years. Same with all other Marvel stuff I've skimmed through recently. Made for the hardcore marvelnerds, couldn't bother less with trying to be readable to neophites. And what's the great idea for renewing the X-Men? Having the versions of the characters from the 60's timetravel to the present day. Meh.
I'm always embarrassed when people watch the movies, love them and ask what they could read now. There's not a single title which I can wholeheartedly recommend. All of them require that you know and understand the universe quite deeply.

But I must admit that I'm loving X-Men Legacy. Legion is an awesome character.

I was reading Supergirl...until she was dragged into that crossover with Superman and Superboy. Since I wasn't reading those titles, I couldn't continue with Supergirl, and I dropped it. I would read more Marvel books, but I can only read so many $3.99 titles before it's too much.

And when it comes to recommendations for fans of the movies, stand-alone, continuity-lite stories usually helps with the easing them into comics =)

Ahhh. Right, the crossovers.
In Italy they put together three titles at a time, because one would have too low a page count (it's a culture thing: our serial monthly comics are usually 90 pages long or so). So even if I say 'Superman' I'm actually talking about something that gathers Action Comics, Superman and Supergirl. During the crossover they included Superboy too, so you could follow the story with only one title.
Same with Green Lantern. It contains both that, Green Lantern Corps and... can't remember the title of the third, the one about the other colors and Kyle Rayner...

I have never seen a marvel continuty-lite title. If you can recommend one, please let me know. I'd be curious to read it myself.

Eh. I like the theme.  I will say that the most humorous one was still JollyJack's.  Shame he's not interested in the job.
